Market update

It has been a while since my last market update (here) when stocks were doing well and bonds were pulling back. Since that time, bonds have been killing it while everything else gets chopped around. In fact, bonds are the only asset or sector in the lists below that are trending in the same direction on all time-frames! Kudos to Decision Moose who has been riding this uptrend in bonds and continues to hold BTTRX. (his Moose Signal is worth checking out each week; here).

New lows are outnumbering new highs, but there are still a decent number of new highs compared to the update on June 7th. I interpret that to mean the market is far from washed out. How likely is a trend reversal to the upside? Well I don't see many extremely oversold stocks, and the % of stocks above the 20-day SMA or T2108 are not at extremely low levels. Thus stocks could drift lower for a while. Despite the rallies in the past weeks, just 36% of US listed stocks are above their 200-day moving average (yikes!). This means about 2 out of 3 stocks have 'technically' bearish charts.

I do this update to maintain an objective sense for what the broad market is doing, because no stock can exist in a vacuum. Ultimately greed and fear grips the majority of investors and speculators and the effects can be far-reaching. However, at the end of the day I am primarily interested in the action of individual stocks and taking disciplined action when they provide buying or selling signals.
