US All-Time Highs (>$10) - May/28/2010

Good Memorial Day to you all. Only 20 stocks hit all-time highs last week on US markets, down from 28 last week and 68 the week before. As I've said before, 20 has been a "floor" for the number of all-time highs over the past 8 months (see the trend here). Each of the previous times the number has fallen to 20 it has been followed by a run up -- we'll see if that happens again in the coming weeks. This week's list is peppered with dollar stores (DG, DLTR, and FDO) and autoparts companies (AZO, ORLY, MNRO). As I said last week, it looks like the "pooring of america" trade continues.

Before I put up the charts, here is a table summarizing a few attributes of each stock in this week's list. I use this list as a starting point to check for red-flags and to find compelling opportunities. Ultimately I only trade when I like the price action and I'm comfortable with the fundamentals. If any of these numbers were important in my decision making for placing a trade I would confirm them at a reputable source (i.e., directly from the company's website or via my broker). Some highlights: First, I prefer stocks with Piotroski scores >7, but scores >4 are ok (here is a brief overview of Piotroski scores). Projected EPS growth is desirable, though I would also check for revenue and sales growth. I want to buy all-time highs, but I prefer to buy them when they are forming a base or after finding support at a moving average, hence low values in the SMA20 column may be close to buypoints, but check the charts. RSI (14) also puts up a flag if the stock is getting overbought it may be better to wait until a better risk-reward buypoint. The next two columns give insight into what the Institutions are doing. Since institutions are large they influence the stock price much more than individuals. An ideal candidate has a modest level of Institutional Ownership (say,  between 20 and 70%) and a high rate of Institutional Transactions (ie. they are buying). Red flags go up when institutions are selling and already own most of the shares. Finally I like to check to see if the company's Long Term debt is large -- none of these stocks appear to have debt issues. So, putting that together, I like the looks of APKT, DPT, IPXL, PMIC, and SXCI.
